The Challenge
A 200-attorney law firm with offices in New York, Washington DC, and London needed to migrate from on-premises Exchange and file servers to Microsoft 365. The migration had to maintain strict ethical walls between practice groups handling conflicting matters, comply with ABA Model Rules for client confidentiality, and complete with zero downtime during a busy litigation period.
Our Solution
CloudTechForce designed a phased migration that maintained full ethical wall compliance throughout. We implemented Microsoft 365 E5 with Azure Information Protection for matter-level document classification, configured ethical walls using Microsoft Purview Communication Compliance, deployed sensitivity labels with automatic classification for privileged communications, migrated 200 mailboxes (average 25GB each) using hybrid Exchange with zero-downtime cutover, and implemented DLP policies to prevent accidental disclosure of privileged information across practice groups.
Results
Zero downtime during migration of 200 mailboxes (5TB total)
Ethical walls maintained throughout migration and post-migration
Document classification applied to 1.2 million existing documents
Bar compliance audit passed within 60 days of migration completion
Annual IT costs reduced 32% through elimination of on-premises servers
"Our ethical obligations to our clients made this migration extremely high-stakes. CloudTechForce understood the legal requirements at a level we have never seen from an IT provider. The ethical wall implementation was flawless."
