Why Did My Microsoft 365 Renewal Quote Go Up? The 2026 Price Increase Explained

If your Microsoft 365 renewal quote just came in higher than expected, you're not alone. Microsoft's 2026 pricing update is landing on renewal dates throughout the year — here's what changed and what to check before you sign.

Business Standard rose from $12.50 to $14.00 per user per month — a 12% increase — as part of a global Microsoft 365 pricing and packaging update Microsoft announced on December 4, 2025. If your renewal quote just came in higher than expected, you are not being singled out. You are one of a steady wave of businesses hitting this at their own renewal date throughout 2026 and into 2027.

Why did my Microsoft 365 price go up?

Microsoft's new pricing took effect July 1, 2026, with the packaging rollout completing by August 1, 2026. The increase does not apply to every customer at once — it applies at your *next renewal*. Because renewal dates are staggered across Microsoft's entire customer base, businesses will keep discovering this increase on their own schedule well into next year, not just around the July effective date.

How much more will I pay?

The exact increase depends on your plan. Business Standard moved from $12.50 to $14.00 per user per month. For the current rate on your specific SKU, consult Microsoft's own licensing FAQ — public pricing pages change, and we would rather point you to the source than publish a number that goes stale.

A renewal is the natural moment to ask whether your current tier still fits. Businesses that adopted Microsoft 365 licensing three or four years ago are often paying for capabilities they never turned on, or missing security features — Conditional Access, Defender for Business, sensitivity labels — bundled into a higher tier they have never evaluated.

What should I check before I renew?

Before accepting a renewal quote at face value: confirm the license count still matches active users (departed employees on paid licenses are a common, invisible cost); check whether your current tier includes the security controls your business actually needs; and compare the cost of consolidating add-on licenses into a single bundled plan instead of paying for several separately.
